maybe i’m strange, but i still like modern films. i never bash remakes until i’ve seen them. i love going to movie theaters for new releases. i love modern horror flicks, and i’m obsessed with a ton of actresses who are still alive.

let’s give modern hollywood a break. for every unnecessary remake and absolutely shitty comedy (i’m looking at you, ted,) modern hollywood has also given us some brilliant original films.

let’s stop hating to hate. let’s bash the movies that have been released and that actually suck.

let’s bash remakes after they come out. who knows. maybe “what ever happened to baby jane?” will be awful. maybe it will just be mediocre. but with the right direction and cast, it could be a classic in its own right. and people who like (or don’t like) the remake could be driven to see the original which would introduce modern audiences to bette and joan, and to classic hollywood in general.

Apparently Hollywood is planning to remake the “Grande Dame Guignol” classic ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?’ Now, before the whole Old Hollywood fandom gets up in arms and starts throwing cigarette butts and wire hangers at some studio executive, let me remind you of four things:

  1. They’re not taking away the classic version. You can still watch it all you want. (I may or may not watch it on repeat.)
  2. They’re not doing it to ‘disgrace’ Bette or Joan. That’s just insane.
  3. They might get a really stellar cast. In fact, the director (Walter Hill, of the Alien franchise) said the following: “The two equal leads demand great performers – that is a given. The intensity of the gothic storyline makes a reconfiguration of the drama still a potentially searing experience. The idea is to make a modern film without modernizing the period. It needs to resonate the golden age of Hollywood.”
  4. If it’s really bad we can make fun of it or ignore it completely.

SO. Let’s just hope for any of the following to be in the cast: Meryl Streep, Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close, Cher, Helen Mirren, Anjelica Huston, Goldie Hawn, Jessia Lange, Gena Rowlands, Judi Dench, Julie Andrews, Angela Lansbury, Shirley MacLaine, Olivia de Havilland, Susan Sarandon, Faye Dunaway, Sigourney Weaver, Kathy Bates, Celeste Holm, Maggie Smith, Jane Fonda, Sissy Spacek, or even Betty White!

My Favorite Human:  Bette Davis

“I have been uncompromising, peppery, intractable, monomaniacal, tactless, volatile, and ofttimes disagreeable… I suppose I’m larger than life.”
